Little intro, I guess this was my idea so a little more about me. I grew up Warrington Rugby League, I grew up Manchester United. I couldn’t play golf as a kid. I remember playing at Walton Muni in Warrington and slicing the ball so badly, off the tee, that it hit my mate, Sav, in the back and I thought i’d disabled him. Luckily it just felled him. No further damage.
I played a lot with my Uncles, Billy and Jimmy. Jimmy took the piss out of me every game. I think it must have been 89 as he sang “I should be so lucky” by Kylie as I lined up a putt. Maybe that spirit of Jimmy is behind what we’re doing. You remember the good shoots, but you remember the good times on the course more. The fact that I remember that says a lot.
I went to my first Wire game at Wembley in 74, I was 3. Remember nothing. But I knew I was Wire.
Sunday was about Rugby. We’d play for Woolston as kids in the morning, we got beat a lot but it didn’t matter. We got crisps and coke after and we loved playing rugby league. Wire got beat a lot too, but we’d be in the Fletcher End cheering our heroes on.
Ditto United, 1980 was my first game. I followed United all-around Europe. Watched us win the Treble, but the Barcelona game in 84 will always be my favourite game. I’ll touch on the current state of United and football in later posts.
I restarted playing golf in the late 90s with Gareth who is involved with this too. Up and down time, I remember sticking two into the car park at Mobberley and thinking shit, put a few onto balconies in Spain too, but I do have my name on the board twice. Never quite got down to single figures and I’m a long way from that now. I’m a holiday golfer these days, but I do go away a lot! Vegas for the rugby and a bit of golf is next up.
Top 3 courses: Secret Harbour in Western Australia, La Cala in Spain, probably Royal Birkdale as it's the only Open course I've played. Honourable mentions to Sherry Golf in Jerez and Birchwood in Warrington, where my name is on the board.
Both United and The Wire are still my teams, I have a little overseas romance with Atletico Madrid. I don’t like how United and The Wire are being run, but they are still my teams.
Happy to wear them on my bag and will be doing so in Vegas. I do like the odd tantrum on course, I'm expecting the phrase "thats worse than United in Europe this year" at least once in Vegas, both from Gareth and myself.
That's what goals and greens is about, and that’s me!
